How to win the guy/girl of your dreams

The dating world is a mystery. How to get a guy in ten days?

You have tried everything. You are getting desperate. How will you ever win her over?

You have already spotted him long ago. But will he ever notice you?

Will she ever fall in love with you? It seems hopeless.

However... there is a way!

Do you believe in love at first sight? Well. It does happen! If not naturally... then why not force it? Give nature a little help. Why, you could do just that!

The Bridge Experiment

You may have heard of the experiment conducted by Donald Dutton and Arthur Aron in 1974. A woman asked men to fill out a survey while standing on a bridge. Afterwards they were told to contact her if they had any remaining questions. She gave them her name and phone number.

One group of men was approached by the woman on a low bridge, one that elicited no fear. The other group was approached on a fear-arousing bridge, high above a cliff. You can imagine their heart may have beat a little faster, and their breathing going somewhat more rapidly. Does this not sound like a guy being in love?

Either way, it turned out men in the second group, crossing the high, fear-arousing bridge were more likely to call the woman afterwards, asking her to go on a date. They had mistakenly attributed their arousal to feeling attracted to the woman.

The Tape Experiment

Another experiment by White, Fishbein and Rutstein in 1981 affirms these findings. This time men listened to a tape and afterwards they were exposed to female students, either attractive or unattractive. They were asked to indicate how much they liked the young woman.

In this case there were three conditions. The neutral condition was listening to a non-arousing tape, an excerpt from a textbook. The two other groups listened to an arousing tape, either positive (a comedy) or negative (something about mutilation).

It turned out the aroused males liked the attractive women better, regardless whether they listened to the positive or the negative tape. However, the reverse was true for the unattractive women: they were liked less in the aroused group.

So, what is my advice to you? If you want to create the illusion of falling in love, you better take your date to a horror movie (or a comedy).

Unless you are not that attractive, that is...
